The cannabis plant has many parts that offer tons of benefits for everyone. The flower buds offer the highest concentration of cannabinoids that many individuals study and consume for its health benefits and psychoactive effects, while the other parts like the leaves and fiber are used for other purposes like materials for making rope, fabric, and more. The major benefit that most people look into right now is its health benefits and the psychoactive effects for adult use.
Two popular cannabinoids are highly sought by many: thetrahydrocannabinol or popularly known as THC and cannabidiol or CBD. The prior cannabinoid offers health benefits that relieves pain with its anti-inflammatory properties, calms and relaxes the individual taking it, and has the side effect of psychoactive effect or the feeling of high. The latter cannabinoid offers the same health benefits, but without the psychoactive effect. Some studies say that CBD is not as potent as THC in terms of health benefits, but at least it still offers the same effects, only lighter. Many cannabis products are based from these cannabinoids and each of them has its own features. There are many other cannabinoids included in the cannabis plant and just recently two more have been found out.
Just recently at the early days of January 2020, a group of Italian researchers found out about these two new cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. These cannabinoids are THCP or the tetrahydrocannabiphorol and CBDP or cannabidiphorol. The actual terms are a mouthful so it would be better to address them with the abbreviated versions. While they might be similar to THC and CBD, they are different from the newer ones. They are kind of similar because they have similar structure and function.
Currently, there are almost 150 phytocannabinoids that have been discovered in the cannabis plant and only a few of them have been isolated and studied closely. The reason why only a few were researched is because of the cannabis’ federal legality in the US. This causes research to be complicated plus the other reason that most strains of cannabis are THC or CBD dominant. Finding those minor cannabinoids will be challenging.
This 2020, research will now be improved and change the way studies will be conducted. There is now the cutting-edge technology called spectrometry that allows researchers to identify unknown compounds in cannabis. It also allows advanced analytical techniques, which enables the researchers to easily discover and classify new cannabis compounds easily.
So what does THCP do? According to the research, the new molecule’s structure is elongated with seven links compared to the regular THC, which has only five links. In recent study, naturally occurring cannabinoids with more than five links in this side chain have not yet been discovered in cannabis, so this is a first. What this also means is that it is more potent compared to the regular THC.
CBDP is also the same in terms of side chains, which is of seven links. It is revealed by the researchers of the study that CBDP will have to be studied further and not a priority. The reason for this is that CBD has poor binding affinity with the receptors called CB1 and CB2. It will not help CBDP in binding more effectively with the body’s receptors, so the other cannabinoid will be studied first instead.
